Hybrid work is here to stay, but it’s challenging employee wellbeing.
Research from Microsoft shows that digital exhaustion is real and more burnout is lurking in the hybrid future of work. It’s paramount to take action when the workforce is responding like this
- 54% feel overworked.
- 39% feel exhausted.
The report shows that the future of the talent pool, Gen Z especially, is hit the hardest. “60% of this generation — those between the ages of 18 and 25 — say they are merely surviving or flat-out struggling right now.” These findings come from a study of more than 30,000 people in 31 countries.
Companies like Microsoft and Google understand the importance of energized employees. Productivity, creativity and the bottom line are at stake when we talk about burnout prevention. It’s mentioned in the advice of the report: “embrace a culture where breaks are encouraged and respected. Our study showed that employees who feel more productive are more likely to take exercise or stretch breaks. Founder of The Digital Wellness, Dr. Donohue, says breaks are even more important in a remote and hybrid world.”
I get hired to train people in optimizing their Personal Energy Management. Performing in the hybrid work environment requires you to be on top of your focus, while dealing with your household. Active recovery is a personal ritual, depending on mood, available time, likes and hobbies. I shared my personal story and methodology for personal energy management with 60 Googlers across Northern Europe. In under two hours 100% of the participants felt better equipped to manage their energy. 75% felt a stronger sense of inclusion and belonging with their Northern Europe colleagues.

Stress as a guide
My clients are people who push the envelope. In the field of performance we’re conditioned to operate at the edge of our comfort zone. One of the most important exercises that I facilitate is about embodied awareness. As a group we share how we detect stress. What are the whispers we hear from our body? A change in mood, tense shoulders or distracted thoughts are signs of your energy dipping. Don’t wait for the whispers to turn into shouts – headaches, clinched jaws and over prolonged periods: burnouts.
Feeling stress is normal – how you deal with that feeling makes a big difference. Acknowledging your inner state and validating that experience is the way forward.
Instead of ignoring the signs, we investigate. Dealing with stress costs energy. What type of stress you are experiencing is a great indicator for what type of energy you need to bounce back. That’s why the Energetic Dimensions are such a helpful framework.
